As 2018 comes to an end, and 2020 begins, we would like to reflect on our achievements and highlights of this past year.
We experienced record-setting enrollment, with close to 190 students enrolled.
We profited $30,000 at the “Celebrate Learning” fundraiser - more than three times that of previous years. Held at Third Degree Glass Factory, it was a spectacular night of food, drinks, music, art, games, and entertainment - all in support of the Maren Fund. We are excited to return to Third Degree for next fundraiser in 2020!
We expanded our programs to academically and socially support middle and high school students. This includes a typing class - using the Chrome Books purchased with fundraising dollars - and a cooking class for high schoolers and young adults. We are currently working on launching a pre-college program that will start in the spring of 2020.
We said goodbye to one of our founding staff members, Mary Sinnett, as she retired from her position as Director of Children’s Activities. Mary has been such a valuable asset to the Maren Fund: Teaching Toddler Time, Early Childhood, and Junior Grad Group classes and planning the lessons for over half of our courses. Some of our students have been working with Mary as long as they can remember! It was a sad goodbye, but we are excited for Mary to take on this next chapter in her life!
We honored two high school graduates: Jacob and Nicholas. Jake and Nicholas have been longtime students, fabulous interns, and essential role models for our Learning Program and Maren Prep classes. We are so proud of these two!
We hired our new Program Director: Shari Max. Shari has been a longtime teacher at the Maren Fund. With years of early childhood education experience under her belt, she will be a valuable asset to our leadership team! In addition to serving as Program Manager, Shari teaches Learning Program Level 1 class, After School Academy and Club 21.
We were recipients of the Cardinals Care Summer Grant! This grant allowed us to purchase new materials and hire additional staff for Learning Program classes, which serves our early childhood and elementary school students.
Thanks to the generous support from our community, we were able to purchase Google Chromebooks for our After School Academy Program! Chromebooks will allow us to open up the use of technology for our students. We plan to use them to integrate typing, communication, and social skills when writing texts and emails into our curriculum!
Over the summer, we partnered with the Kirkwood Legion Baseball Team. At each home game, our students got to throw out the first pitch and hang with the team in the dugout.
We participated in our first profit-share with Culver's on November 4. Culver's donated 10 percent of the night’s proceeds to the Maren Fund, and our interns got to work as servers. It was a great experience, and we hope to do more in the future!
We hosted another fabulous holiday party with all of our Maren Prep students and their families. Games, cooking, gift exchanges, and more. We love celebrating the holidays and all of the friendships our students and parents have formed.
Overall, our teachers and parents continue to notice our student’s abilities to retain skills learned in class and apply them to real-life situations.
These highlights are just a selection of many amazing times we had in 2019. Thank you to everyone who supported us this past year. We look forward to sharing our journey with you in 2020!
To help us continue these achievements into 2020 and reach new ones, we invite you to make a charitable donation to the Maren Fund.
